Reimagining wayfinding for the evolving Indian railway experience.

RAILWAY DESIGN CENTRE - 2024

Introducing POL 1.0

PROPOSAL 01 / NEAR FUTURE ยท 5โ€“6 YEARS

An adaptive, interactive wayfinding kiosk designed to simplify navigation within railway stations. POL 1.0 provides personalised routes through a 3D station map, with the option to print directions for passengers to follow throughout their journey.

Rethinking the Journey, Beyond the Train.

Railway stations are more than transit points; they are complex environments where thousands of passengers navigate through information, spaces and services every day.

Undertaken at the Railway Design Centre, this project explores how emerging technologies could reshape wayfinding within Indian railway stations. Through research, observation and speculative design, we envisioned two future possibilities that make navigation more intuitive, adaptive and inclusive.

Lack of Clarity & Consistency

Poor readability, inconsistent signage and improper placement make essential information difficult to locate and understand.

Information Overload & Navigation Confusion

Cluttered signboards and overwhelming information create uncertainty when locating platforms and navigating stations.

Accessibility & Digital Gaps

Language barriers and limited digital integration restrict access to intuitive, inclusive and personalised navigation.

โ€œTo design an intuitive and effective wayfinding system that simplifies navigation within railway stations, enabling passengers to easily locate platforms, exits and essential facilities through clear, accessible and user-friendly guidance.โ€

Exploring Possibilities

Introducing POL 2.0

PROPOSAL 02 / NEAR FUTURE ยท 12-15 YEARS

POL 2.0 envisions a future where railway navigation becomes more immersive, interactive and inclusive. Centred around an advanced HoloTable, the system combines real-time 3D holographic maps, personalised route guidance and accessible interactions to help passengers navigate complex railway environments with greater ease.

The proposed wayfinding systems envision more intuitive, accessible and personalised navigation across railway stations. By integrating real-time information, interactive technologies and inclusive guidance, these concepts have the potential to enhance passenger experiences beyond conventional signage.

Designed with scalability and adaptability in mind, the systems could extend to other transportation hubs, contributing to the development of smarter and more inclusive public infrastructure.
